Destination Uganda

Uganda is yet another one of East Africa’s stunning countries with its fantastic natural scenery. From the moment you land at Entebbe’s modern and efficient international airport, with its breathtaking equatorial location on the forested shore of Lake Victoria; it is clear that Uganda is no ordinary safari destination. Just 40 km from Entebbe, sprawled across seven hills, is the capital city Kampala. The bright modern feel of this bustling, cosmopolitan city reflects the ongoing economic growth and the tradition of hospitality of the people. Uganda’s ecology suggests that this is where the East African Savannah meets the West African Jungle. Hence it is popularly known as home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population which is found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Yet there’s more to the country than wildlife. Uganda also offers world-class white water rafting at the source of the Nile in the Rwenzori National Park. Since the tourism industry is still being re-established, the national parks see far fewer visitors than the neighbouring Kenya and Tanzania. But been a beautiful country with a great deal to offer, sooner or later the tourist hordes will 'discover' this ‘Pearl of Africa” - make sure you get there before they do.

Situated in East Africa, Uganda is mostly a plateau, a compact country occupying an area of 236,580 square kilometres and averaging about 1100 metres (3,250 ft) above sea level. The country is bordered by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to the west, to the south lies Tanzania, Sudan to the north and Kenya to the east. Uganda also shares the massive Lake Victoria waters with Tanzania and Kenya. Here the Nile begins its 4,000-mile journey at Jinja, 50 km east of Kampala, right at the headwaters of Lake Victoria, before hurtling in a fit of rapids and falls on its lengthy journey to the Mediterranean. Other interesting geographical features are the Mountain Elgon which is an extinct volcano found on the eastern side of the country and the Rwenzori Ranges- also known as the Mountains of the Moon- located on the western side

It lies astride the Equator and is known for its fine mild climate with copious rainfall that is experienced three times a year and sunny months. This often does not require the wearing of warm clothing except on some chilly nights in the mountainous areas in western and eastern Uganda. Uganda is on the sunny side most of the year, especially in the central region. Rainfall comes in torrents when delayed, especially when the expected patterns are delayed for some months. For example in the southern half of Uganda there is rainfall from March to May and from September to November. The rest of the periods are dry. There is a well-distributed rainfall pattern around the Lake Victoria Crescent, with storms and unpredictable rains falling during seasons when there is no rain elsewhere in Uganda.
